Radiation Oncology practices have been hearing about the RO Model for a couple of years now. Hopefully you are familiar with the CMS Innovation center. If you are not or are just not knowing where to start, we know it can be overwhelming. Below are few basic first steps.

Step 1: Check the zip code of each practice facility to determine participation. The participation rule applies to physical locations where treatment is performed. A practice with multiple locations could have some that must participate and some that will not.
The zip code list is found at: https://innovation.cms.gov/media/document/ro-model-zip-codes-list-nov2021

Step 2: If you find one or more of your facilities must participate, you need to get enrolled for the two CMS provider portals: Radiation Oncology Administrative Portal (ROAP) and The RO Model Secure Data Portal. Both are crucial to ensure your provider data is accurate and so you have access to your practice data affecting your reimbursements, etc.
For detailed information on each of these, go to this CMS page: https://innovation.cms.gov/innovation-models/radiation-oncology-model

Step 3: Learn the ins and outs of the RO Model and how it will affect your practice from billing, payments and quality reporting requirements. There are available webinar recording and presentations, an extensive collection of RO Model FAQ’s, the RO Model HCPCs code lists, the included ICD-10 codes and much more.
You can find all of these above and more here: https://innovation.cms.gov/innovation-models/radiation-oncology-model

Step 4: Contact your billing software provider to ensure they are aware of the RO Model needs and are working to be prepared.
